Vacationing with the Family Part 3-Delphi

Our second stop on our tour was Delphi. Legend has it that Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of Earth to locate its center. The eagles crossed paths above Delphi on the slopes of Mt. Parnassos. The cult of Apollo was established in Delphi in the 8th century BCE and leaders and commoners began to make the pilgrimage to the oracle of sacred Delphi to consult the high priestess, Pythia. Delphi's influence was felt until Roman times. Now, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We only spent one full day here, as the city is really only known for one thing-the ancient pilgrimage. We started by touring the archeological site, which contained the Athenian Treasury, Temple of Apollo, and Serpentine Column. We ended by checking out all the artifacts that were found at the site in the museum. This place is best explored through pictures...

This is the Athenian Treasury. Each territory around Greece had its own treasury, but the Athens one was best maintained by far.

A view of the agora and votive buildings.

The theatre at Delphi.

One of the main pieces of Delphi is a 200 meter long stadium where games were held every four years. These games were second only to the Athenian games.

Tomorrow, we head to Athens for a day before heading out to the islands!
