New Friends, Silent Thessaloniki, Selfie Museum, and Brunch! Oh My!

We are now just two weeks away from the start of the school year (September 9). I will start to go back to school this week now that the school is open so that I can get my head wrapped around my new classroom and start to get organized. My official day back is next week Monday (August 26) for teacher orientation. So last week was really our final week of no interruption summer.

Miller started his week by being brave and asking the boy across the hall to play. This boy is about the same age as Miller (just a tad younger). His mom is also a teacher, but in a Greek school. The boys hit is off right away and have been going back and forth between the apartments to play video games and board games.

We also awoke one morning to a VERY silent city. Since Thessaloniki has about 800,000 people in it, and we live on one of the busiest streets, that was odd. On my run that morning, I noticed that everything was closed. Turns out, there was a holiday! It was the Assumption of Mary. Now, I know that day from going to church, but I completely forgot that those holidays are national holidays here. It was the perfect day for board games, reading, and a walk by the sea for us.

Over the weekend, we decided to try out Thessaloniki's Selfie Museum. It was weird and fun! Basically, there are all these pre set-up scenes in the museum. They give you a platform with a circle light and remote button that can have your camera take photos when you aren't by it, and then you just take silly photos! We were there about an hour. It was great fun and we spent most of it laughing. Check out some of the results below:

Yesterday I went to get brunch with one of the other new teachers at Pinewood. Each time I get to meet one of the staff I will be working with this year, it makes me so excited for school to start. So far, everyone I have met from my school has such a positive, friendly, and hardworking personality. I cannot wait to meet everyone next week. I am hoping that I will have some cool school things to write about in my next blog post!
